I was putting my cast iron pan away wet for months until my friend saw me do it

He pointed out that even a little water left on it will cause rust spots, so now I dry it on the warm stove for a minute before putting it up. Anyone have a better way to keep theirs in good shape?

Washing with soap is totally fine if you rinse and dry it right away.

Remember my roommate used to wash his with soap and water, which made me cringe every time. He swore it was fine, but his pan always looked dull and felt rough. I finally convinced him to just scrub it with coarse salt and a paper towel, and the difference was huge. Now he's the one giving cast iron advice at our cookouts.
