My uncle told me to always soak cedar posts in a vinegar mix before setting them, so I tried it on a job in Tacoma.

The whole yard smelled like a giant pickle jar for a week, but honestly, those posts look fantastic a year later. Anyone have a less pungent trick that works just as well?

That "giant pickle jar" smell sounds intense! I've heard soaking them in a borax solution can work without the strong vinegar smell. Might be worth a shot for your next project.

Tried borax on a really nasty jar last month and it worked great. You still need to scrub but the smell is way better, right?

Wait, @maryh96, doesn't borax have a pretty strong smell too though?
