Saw a new way to handle a slope on a job in Asheville

They were building a cedar fence on a steep hill and used a stepped design, but each section was a full 8 feet wide instead of the usual 6. It made the whole thing look way more solid. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for when to go wider on a stepped run?

That stepped design with 8 foot sections sounds solid. I've seen a lot of fences fail on steep grades because the sections were too short.

Isn't the real problem using pre-made sections at all on a steep slope? Even eight foot panels can rack and twist if the ground isn't flat, which Claire mentioned. A custom run of pickets on a continuous rail just handles the grade better.

Yeah, short sections are a total pain on hills.
