That time I realized I was haggling all wrong at flea markets
I spent three years paying sticker price at a flea market in Lancaster until an old vendor told me I should start my offer at half what they ask and work up from there. Has anyone else had a veteran seller give them a tip that changed how they shop?

My buddy tried that half price thing at a vintage market in Portland and the guy just stared at him for like ten seconds without saying anything. He ended up paying the full asking price just to break the awkward silence.

Yeah I read something similar in a blog post about vintage shopping etiquette. Guy wrote about how he learned the hard way that some sellers at niche markets take pricing really personally. They see it as a reflection of their curation skills, not just stuff they're trying to move. Half price is basically saying "I don't respect your time or expertise." The person suggested starting at 20-30% off, with a genuine compliment about the piece first. That way it feels like a conversation, not a confrontation.

Man that's BRUTAL. I used to think lowballing was just part of the game at markets, but stories like this make me rethink it completely. You can't just throw out a number and hope the awkwardness works in your favor.
