Our back lot looks like a metal graveyard and it's killing me

Every time I clock out, I walk past mountains of casting scrap that could be recycled. The furnace runs non-stop but we just keep adding to the pile instead of reusing it. They say installing a better sorting system would hurt profits this quarter. I saw a bird's nest made entirely from our waste wire last month, which just feels wrong. We're literally pouring potential product into the ground. I brought it up at the safety meeting and got blank stares. Sometimes I think this place will just rust into the earth...

Wait, a bird's nest made from your waste wire? That's messed up. How can they ignore a huge pile of metal that could be used again? The furnace runs all the time but they just add to the scrap heap. You told them and they stared blankly? That's pure greed. They're throwing away good material for no reason. This whole thing is wasteful and stupid.

Honestly I was right there with you for years. It looks so stupid from the outside. But working around it showed me the math they're doing. Melting down mixed scrap takes more energy and labor than just buying new, clean wire off the truck. That blank stare you got is because to them, it's not about the material, it's about keeping the furnace running nonstop with the easy stuff. Saving the scrap pile would actually cost them more in downtime and sorting. Makes me sick too, especially seeing that bird nest.

Actually, that scrap pile isn't all good wire. A lot of it is contaminated or mixed grades. Melting that junk down would ruin a whole batch of new product. It's still wasteful, but it's a messy kind of waste.
