Tried meal planning by category instead of by day

I used to plan each day's dinner specifically. Got to Thursday and realized I had no energy for the complicated stir fry I picked out. Has anyone else had better luck just buying ingredients and going freestyle?

Oh totally this is the only way that works for me now! I started doing the same thing last year where I just stock up on like chicken thighs, bell peppers, onions, and a few sauces then throw stuff together based on how I'm feeling that night. Way less stressful than staring at my fancy meal plan on Wednesday knowing I have to make something that takes an hour when I just want tacos. I still keep a loose idea of what I'll cook but the freedom is such a game changer.

That "when I just want tacos" part gets me because that's exactly when I used to beat myself up for not sticking to my plan. Do you find that you end up spending more on groceries buying for flexibility like this, or does it actually save you money overall? I've been thinking of trying it but I'm worried I'll just keep grabbing random stuff and wasting half of it.

My neighbor Betty's been doing this for years, she’s 72 and just buys what’s on sale then cooks whatever she wants that night. She says her husband used to complain but now he’s just happy to eat.
