Found a piece of petrified wood in a creek bed near Flagstaff that everyone kept calling a fossil. It's not, and the difference matters for figuring out the area's history.

That Flagstaff creek bed must be full of volcanic ash.

Volcanic ash is a good guess, but that whole area is full of sedimentary rock from ancient lakes. Petrified wood is found in those layers all the time. It gets preserved by silica in the groundwater, not just from ash falls. So finding it there can still tell you a lot about the old environment.

Petrified wood is a fossil, though.
