Hot take: Vinegar soaks for geodes require serious patience
Letting them sit for at least 24 hours dissolves the matrix without damaging the crystals. I had one that took three days to clean properly.

Ever notice how the stuff that's actually worth it almost always forces you to wait? Like baking your own bread, the rise time is non-negotiable. Or learning a new guitar chord, your fingers just need those boring weeks to build memory. Rushing it gives you a flat loaf or a muddy sound. The geode thing is the same rule, just with rocks. Good results seem to need that empty space where you can't do anything but let time work.

Patience is not my strong suit when it comes to vinegar soaks! I once pulled a geode out after only two hours because I got too excited. The matrix was still stuck on like glue, and I had to start all over again. Your three-day soak sounds like a dream compared to my rushed attempts. Learning to wait is the hardest part of this hobby for me.

Oh totally, I get that rush to check on them! What helped me was setting a phone calendar reminder for the full 24 hours, so I wouldn't even peek. For the really tough ones, I wrap them in a paper towel soaked in vinegar and stick the whole thing in a sealed plastic bag. It keeps the vinegar from drying out and you can just forget about it for a few days. Seeing a perfectly clean crystal face pop out after waiting is the best payoff.
