Bought my dad a $75 'smart' plant sensor that texts you when to water it... the thing died after a week and the app just says 'sensor offline' forever now.

Used to think those things were neat, but that's exactly why I stick with the finger-in-the-dirt test now.

Oh man, no, it actually didn't. My friend Sarah had this old phone that would just die without warning, no texts or anything. She kept it on her nightstand and one morning it just wouldn't turn on. She tried charging it with different cables, holding the power button for like a minute, nothing worked. She had to take it to a repair shop and they said the battery was completely fried. It never gave her any signs it was on its way out, just gave up quietly.
