Totally get that, I put off buying one for so long thinking it was just a fad.

Three whole hours without your phone sounds like some kind of torture...

Actually, cheap sensors can sometimes surprise you near the coast if you keep up with basic care. @kevin_martin's bad luck sounds rough, but my buddy's budget setup lasted two seasons with just regular wipe-downs (and a cheap silicone spray coating). It's not always about spending more, just being a bit more hands-on with maintenance before problems start.

Remember that guy who always mocked the safety goggles rule? My friend did that until a tiny metal spark flew past his cheek at work. He came home that night and his toddler pointed at the red mark saying "Daddy's boo-boo." He showed up early to the next safety talk about face shields. Honestly, @charlie843, you're right about people counting on you. Seeing his kid's worried face made all those boring protocols feel totally different.

Ugh, moisture is the worst! @green.river might be onto something, because my own cutting board did the same thing near a steamy kettle. You could try flipping it over for a few days to see if it settles back.
