Ran into an old school forum mod who told me I was reviewing anime wrong

At a con last month, this guy who used to run a massive fansub forum said I was too focused on animation quality and missing the themes. He pointed out one episode of Haibane Renmei that I'd glossed over and it made me rewatch the whole series. Has anyone else had a random comment completely flip how you see a show?

I mean dude was a mod on a fansub forum not exactly a film critic or anything lol. But if it made you enjoy the show more then whatever works I guess.

Wait hold on, he was a mod on a fansub forum? Like one of those old sites where people uploaded bootleg anime episodes? @taylorhunt I had no idea that was his background. Thats wild. I mean the quality of that translation he did for the show was super clean and professional feeling to me. Kinda changes how I look at it now knowing he was just some guy on a forum and not like a real translator or something.
