PSA: My $3 thrift store knife outcuts my fancy Wusthof every time
I was over at a friend's place in Nashville last weekend helping them cook dinner. They handed me this beat up old chef's knife they got at Goodwill for like $3 and it sliced through tomatoes like butter. My $100 Wusthof at home has been collecting dust because it's too heavy and dulls fast. Now I'm wondering if I should just ditch the expensive knives and hit up thrift stores for old carbon steel blades. Has anyone else had luck finding good kitchen knives secondhand?

a beat up old chef's knife they got at Goodwill for like $3" is the real deal. I've got a carbon steel Sabatier from a garage sale that was rusty and had a chip in the blade. Spent maybe 20 minutes with a sharpening stone and it's now my go-to for everything. The steel is thin and takes an edge like nothing else. My stainless Wusthof just feels clunky and lifeless compared to it.

Wow, a $3 knife that makes a Wusthof feel like a brick? That's either the best deal of the century or you've got some kind of magical sharpening stone (seriously, where do I get one of those?). I can just picture you at the garage sale holding it up like a treasure while the seller shrugs and says "it's got rust, kid." Honestly, I think we all secretly hope our next thrift store find will be that one broken-in miracle tool that makes our fancy stuff feel useless.
