I put my flock on a fermented feed diet for 3 months and the eggshells got way too thick

I mean, the yolks were super orange and they seemed happy, but I had to crack eggs with a knife. Anyone else get weird results from changing feed?

Read an article a while back about how too much calcium in a hen's diet can actually make the shells too thick and brittle. The fermentation process might be making the existing calcium in the feed way more available for them to absorb. Maybe try cutting back a bit on the oyster shell or limestone grit if you're still giving them that separately. Those super orange yolks are a great sign for their overall health, though.

Thick shells are a good problem to have, means they're getting plenty of calcium.
