Showerthought: I bought a $300 digital thermometer that was basically useless for real smoking

Back in 2018, I got this fancy Bluetooth probe set that promised perfect temps from my phone. The app was buggy, lost connection constantly, and the probes gave up after maybe six cooks. Ended up going back to my old $40 ThermoPop for the quick checks and a simple wired probe for the long smokes. Anyone else have a gadget they were sold on that just didn't work out for our kind of cooking?

Remember when my brother tried to smoke a brisket with a smart oven that had a built in probe. Thing kept telling him to "reconnect to wifi" while the meat just sat there. He ended up borrowing my old analog oven thermometer halfway through. Wright.luna is right, the simple stuff just works when you need it to.

That "simple wired probe for the long smokes" is the real key. I tried a few wireless ones that were always fussy, but a basic probe with a long cord just sits in the meat and works every time. It's the one piece of gear that never lets me down.
