My group's 4 hour campaign night exploded over house rules

Last month we started a new fantasy campaign and one guy keeps arguing the same edge case about line of sight, quoting the rulebook page numbers every single time. Last night he stormed off after a call on a lightning spell, and the host now wants a vote on banning him or banning house rule debates entirely. How do other groups handle one rules lawyer killing the fun without just kicking them out?

Wait, isn't the whole point of a rulebook that somebody actually read it?

Who actually reads those things cover to cover anyway? Half the time they're just there to cover someone's rear end.

Aw man, you'd think so, right? I've bought plenty of rulebooks for board games and stalled out somewhere around page three, so I'm definitely part of the problem. These things are basically a promise that the fun starts later, and my attention span taps out way before the fun does.
