Found out a book I loved was almost never published

I was reading an author interview in the back of my book club pick (The Night Circus, you know, that one) and found out the writer got over 30 rejections before a small press said yes. That's wild to me because it's such a big hit now. Our whole group argued about whether editors today would still pass on it. Has your club ever read a book that almost didn't make it to shelves?
