Spotted a 'seconds' bin at my local produce stand for budget veggies
I was at the local produce stand yesterday and spotted their 'seconds' bin. It's got veggies that look a bit rough but are perfectly fine. Grabbed some potatoes and cabbage for a hash that cost almost nothing. Made enough to feed me for days. Even my dog seems to approve when I sneak him a piece. It's a no-brainer for saving money on meals. Worth a look if you're trying to stretch your grocery budget.

I always thought those bins were for damaged goods, but your hash idea sounds AMAZING. It proves you can eat well without spending a lot. I'm totally converted now.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head with that hash idea. I used to walk past those bins too, but now I raid them every time I shop. Just last month I found some bruised potatoes and onions, turned them into a killer breakfast skillet that fed me for days. It's not just about saving cash, though that's a huge plus, it's about getting creative with what you have. Sometimes the "damaged" stuff is perfectly fine, just a little ugly, and it cooks up just the same. Once you get into the habit, you'll spot chances everywhere in the store to eat well for less.

Yeah, @barbaraw16, I used to walk past those bins thinking they were just for rotten stuff. Once you dig in, you realize most of it is totally fine, just a little ugly. I always hit the bin first thing in the morning when they add new items, so you get the pick of the bunch. That cabbage and potato hash is a perfect example, but you can do the same with soft tomatoes for sauce or wilted greens for soup. It cuts your food bill way down and you stop so much from going to waste. The key is just not caring how it looks before you chop it up.
