Started putting $20 a week into a separate account for yard tools instead of pulling from savings on a whim, and after 8 months I had $640 cash for a new mower without touching my emergency fund
I figured I'd just buy a cheaper mower than I wanted but turns out having that dedicated pile of cash made me actually shop around for a zero-turn that was on clearance at a local dealer, have any of you tried a similar stash system for specific expenses?

john_singh calling it wasteful probably means he hasn't stocked up on ramen for a "buy once, cry once" tool fund yet. I ended up stashing cash in an envelope labeled "lawnmower dreams" and felt like a real adult until I realized I had to actually walk past the ice cream aisle to get to the register. Ended up with a zero-turn that's way too nice for my tiny yard, but at least I didn't have to explain to my wife why I dipped into the "new fridge" jar. The system works great as long as your willpower isn't as weak as mine.
