My 10 year old KitchenAid mixer gearbox finally gave out while making cookie dough last Sunday

I was folding in chocolate chips and heard a loud crunch then it just stopped spinning. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these or is it time to just buy a new one?

You're right that it feels that way sometimes, @perry.karen. But I actually think we just notice the timing more when things go wrong, you know? My laptop died right before a deadline last month, but it also survived years of abuse before that. The truth is stuff is always wearing down, we just don't pay attention until it hits at a bad moment. Kind of like how you don't notice all the times your car starts fine, only when it leaves you stranded. So yeah, it sucks when it happens, but I don't think the universe is really out to get us.
