Overheard a dude at the Coffee House on Clifton talking about street parking

I was always against paying for the city parking permits, thought it was a waste of $50. But this guy was explaining how the lack of permits makes our block a nightmare for snow plows and emergency vehicles. He said 'the street turns into a slalom course for fire trucks every February' and that honestly hit me. Now I'm thinking about getting one. Anyone else change their mind on these permits after seeing what happens in winter?

Wait, what blocks get permits enforced and which ones dont? I live over on Wheeler and we had the same problem with contractors and non-residents parking all day last winter, but I see enforcement trucks driving past every morning without ticketing anyone. Is it random or do you have to report them or something?

Gotta disagree with you on this one. I live on a side street downtown and got a permit last year thinking it would fix things, but the plows still missed my block for three days after that February storm. The permit money just goes to the city general fund, not to actually clearing snow or fixing parking issues. On top of that, I know folks who live near campus who bought permits only to have contractors park in their spots all day anyway because enforcement is basically nonexistent.

Heard a rumor the city's considering switching to a private contractor system for snow removal next year, but knowing how local government works it'll probably just mean more fees with the same result. @adam675, you're right about the enforcement thing, seems like they only ticket if someone calls and complains directly about a specific car.
