Overheard a guy at the hardware store say solar panels are a scam

So I'm grabbing some lightbulbs and this dude tells his friend that solar panels are a total money pit cause his neighbor's panels didn't work after a hailstorm last year. I wanted to jump in and say that's just bad installation or old tech, but I kept my mouth shut. Has anyone else run into this kind of myth spreading around?

I had a neighbor say the exact same thing after one bad storm last May.

Three storms in two years is what it took on my street before people started paying attention to the dead branches hanging over their driveways.
