Unpopular opinion: Switching to a heat pump was a six-month nightmare
The permitting and inspection process in my town took over 4 months alone, just for a simple install. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of red tape when trying to make a basic upgrade?

Ugh, that sounds awful. I went through the same mess last year. What finally worked was calling the town office every single day. I just kept asking for updates. Got the inspector's direct line too. Annoying, but it pushed my paperwork to the top of the pile. Took two weeks of pestering them, but it got done.

Yeah, the "pushed my paperwork to the top of the pile" part from @the_margaret is a common feeling, but in my experience it doesn't really work that way with most town offices. They usually have to process things in the order they come in, legally. Calling for updates is solid advice, but calling every single day can sometimes just annoy the clerk and slow everything down for everyone. I found asking for a realistic timeline once and then calling back a day after that date passes works better without burning a bridge.

Can't believe they gave you the inspector's direct line. That's like finding a secret cheat code for government paperwork. Most town offices guard those numbers like state secrets.
