A friend told me to skip the small talk at networking events and just ask for help

My buddy from the Corktown Business Association said, 'Don't waste time, just tell people what you need.' I tried it at a meetup in Midtown last week and it totally backfired, people just got awkward and moved on. Has anyone else found a better way to start a real conversation at these things?

Found it works better to ask about their work first, like what projects they're excited about right now. That gets them talking and builds a bit of a connection... then I'll mention a specific challenge I'm having that relates. People seem way more willing to help once they feel like you're actually interested in them.

I mean maybe it's just me but I agree with victor_ward, that direct ask feels too pushy.
