Vent: My friend told me to skip the Detroit Regional Chamber mixer last month
He said big events were a waste of time. I went anyway and met the owner of a print shop in Midtown. We talked for 20 minutes and now he's my biggest client. Who else has had a good connection at a big Detroit event?

Yeah I read a piece about how Detroit's business scene is all about showing up. Those mixers can feel huge and random, but you only need one good talk to make it worth it. Glad you went and it worked out.

Disagree with the idea that you have to go to those big things to make it. I got my best jobs from people I already knew or from small, repeat customers. Those mixers are so loud and full of people just handing out cards, it feels fake. Williams90 has a point about showing up, but showing up at the right small spot works better for me. I'd rather have coffee with one person who needs help than shout over a crowd hoping to get lucky.
