I tried to tape a ceiling with a 6 inch knife versus my normal 12 inch
My 12 inch knife was in the truck and I was feeling lazy, so I grabbed a small one from a patch kit. In my experience, that was a mistake. The 6 inch just couldn't hold enough mud and I ended up with ridges and a ton of extra sanding. My shoulder was killing me after an hour. Anyone got a good trick for when your main blade is out of reach?

Honestly that whole backloading trick sounds like extra steps for the same bad result. Tbh if my 12 inch is out in the truck, I'm just going to go get it. Five minutes of walking beats an hour of fighting a tiny knife and then all that extra sanding later. That small blade just can't move enough mud to get a smooth coat, no matter how you load it.

Grab a putty knife from your toolbox, the stiff 4-inch kind. Use it to load the mud onto the back of your small knife, like a mini hawk. It keeps you from going back to the pan every two seconds. You still get ridges, but it's way faster than that constant dipping.
