Finally switched from a standard rounding hammer to a cross peen for setting clips, and wow, what a difference.

I was stubborn about it for a long time, just using what I had. Tried the cross peen on a tough draft horse shoe last week in Spokane. The control is just better, way less glancing blows. My shoulder isn't screaming at me after six shoes anymore. What other 'basic' tool upgrades have you all made that actually mattered?

My old farrier mentor in Montana swore by a good crease nail puller over a standard one. He said it saved his wrists on a hundred head of cattle a week. I finally bought one and he was totally right.

Maybe it's just me but I never got the hype over special nail pullers like oscarb71 mentioned. A good standard one works fine if you keep it sharp. Seems like an extra thing to buy for a small fix.

It's funny how often the right tool for a pro gets seen as overkill for a weekend job. Oscar's farrier story is a perfect example. I see it with kitchen knives too. My friend who cooks all day needs her fancy sharp ones, but my cheap set works for my three meals. The right gear matters most when you're doing the thing over and over, not just once in a while.
