Pro tip: check your fabric sample twice before you buy a whole roll

I bought 15 yards of this beautiful silk blend online for a dress project, thinking it was the same weight as the sample I got. When the big roll showed up, it was way thinner and sheer. I'm out about $300 because I can't use it for the structured piece I planned. Has anyone found a good way to test fabric weight before a big order?

The sample was 5 inches square and the actual fabric was cut from a different dye lot, which changes the hand feel entirely. People act like samples are some kind of scam, but you got a chance to see the color, the weave, and the drape before committing to a big buy. If the weight was that critical for your project, you could have ordered a half yard first to confirm the hand feel and finished edge. That would have cost you maybe $15 instead of $300. I get being frustrated, but at some point you have to take some responsibility for skipping the extra verification step.

It's like they bait you with the good sample first!

Oh man, that's such a gut punch! I see this everywhere now, where the small sample or trial version feels totally different from the real thing you buy. It happened with my favorite hot sauce, the sample bottle was thick and spicy but the big one I ordered was watery. Makes you lose trust.
