Just spent $120 on a floral cooler thermostat upgrade after losing a whole batch of peonies to heat
My old thermostat went out during a heatwave last July and I lost $300 in peonies before I realized it, so I bought a digital one with a temp alarm for $120 and it's already saved me twice, has anyone else had trouble with those old dial thermostats?

Dial thermostats worked fine for decades before they started cheaping out on the parts. That old one you had probably just got a bad batch of peonies from a supplier who didn't store them right in the first place. Losing $300 hurts but spending $120 on a fancy upgrade feels like throwing good money after bad to me. I'd rather put that cash into a backup cooler or a simple temp gauge I can check myself every few hours. Digital alarms are nice until the battery dies or the sensor fails, then you're back to square one with a dead display. Seems like more stuff to break compared to a mechanical dial that just keeps ticking along.

Mechanical dials just keep working, no batteries needed.

Did you ever have a digital thermostat fail on you like that? I used to think mechanical dials were bulletproof too, but after losing a whole batch of expensive flowers to a heat spike I couldn't see, I changed my mind. The alarm on mine has already caught two temperature drops before they ruined anything, so for me peace of mind was worth the extra cash.
