Setting up a simple referral program took me three whole days

I thought adding a referral system to my site would be easy, maybe a few hours with a plugin. The problem was getting the automated thank you emails to send correctly only after someone's friend actually signed up. I messed with the settings for way too long before I found the right trigger. Has anyone else had a referral setup take way longer than you planned?

My cousin's food blog had a similar thing with email signup confirmations. The welcome email kept going out to people who just clicked the link but never actually finished the form. I mean, we spent a whole weekend just staring at the mail service dashboard trying to figure out the delay setting. It's crazy how one little checkbox can mess up the whole flow.
