Friend told me my coffee tasted like dirty water so I bought a scale
I was making pour over coffee for like 6 months and thought it was fine. Then a buddy tried it and said it just tasted thin and weak. He asked how much coffee I used and I said I just eyeballed it. He told me to get a $15 scale from Amazon and weigh out 20 grams for every 300ml of water. First cup after that was way better. Now I wonder how much bad coffee I drank before that. Anyone else have a friend who gave them a brutal but helpful coffee critique?

yeah that scale was the game changer for me too. once you actually measure instead of guessing everything just hits different.

Measuring things just kills the mystery of whether you're actually good at eyeballing it or not.

Did you really think it was fine before, or was it more like you just got used to it? I was the same way with my French press, I used a scoop and thought it was perfect. Then a friend pointed out my coffee was always bitter and I finally got a scale like @the_sam said. Turns out I was using way too much water and not enough beans for years. The difference is night and day now.
