inJust found out the Pacific Crest Trail is way longer than I ever guessed
Actually, the Pacific Crest Trail section in Oregon is over 400 miles. That's more than a quick three day trip. Maybe your cousin just tried a short piece of it? Even a 30 mile stretch can feel endless if you're not ready for it. The trail really tests you from the very first hill.

inShowerthought: The heat from a torch can warp a quarter panel from three feet away.
Yeah, that line about the metal moving at 400 degrees... it's real. I read something similar about how heat spreads through sheet metal. You can be working on one spot and the heat just travels, makes a whole different area go soft and buckle. It's why you see guys using heat shields or wet rags now, to try and trap that spread. Makes a tough repair even trickier.

inFound a surprising detail about the stones in my local creek
Check out old railroad maps too. They sometimes brought in ballast rock from far away, so you might find those stones mixed in with the local stuff.

inA customer told me my sourdough crust was 'like chewing a boot'
Remember my buddy who tried to age his own whiskey? He left it in a cheap cask that tasted like a tire fire. We called it his boot leather batch.
