Saw a sign at the Kroger in Dayton for 'manager's special' meat packs

They had these big packs of chicken thighs for $1.99 a pound, which is a solid deal. But they also had ground beef marked down to $2.49 a pound, and it looked a little gray. Is it worth buying the cheaper beef if you cook it that night, or should you always stick with the fresher-looking chicken? What's your rule for those last-chance markdowns?

Grab the beef if you cook it right away, but that chicken price is hard to beat.

What counts as cooking it right away though, like same day? Or you got a couple hours?

The USDA says two hours max at room temp. That's the official safe window. If it's above 90 degrees outside, you only get one hour before bacteria grows. So yeah, same day, but don't let it sit on the counter.
