Vent: I was sure the 'envelope system' was just a dumb trend for people who can't use a debit card.

After my checking account got hit with three overdraft fees in March, I gave it a shot with $400 cash for groceries and gas, and it actually stopped me from overspending at the store.

Oh man, I was the exact same way. I used to make fun of my grandma for her cash envelopes, like it was some ancient ritual. Then I blew my whole grocery budget on fancy cheese and fancy crackers in one trip. Holding the actual money makes it real in a way a card just isn't. I guess we're all just one overdraft fee away from becoming our grandparents.

Three overdraft fees in one month was my wake-up call too. I used to think cash was for old people until my card got declined buying milk. Having that physical limit makes you stop and think before you grab the extra bag of chips. It feels stupid until you realize your bank account isn't screaming at you anymore. I guess sometimes the simple fix is the one that actually works.

Totally get it, @evan295. Cash forces you to feel the limit.
