My neighbor told me to skip the rain barrel and just get a bigger one
I thought a small 50-gallon one was fine for my garden, but after a dry month in Portland, I ran out of water twice. Should I have just listened and gone for the 100-gallon tank from the start?

Watched my friend in Seattle try to make a 55-gallon barrel work for her whole veggie patch. She ended up having to refill it with the hose by July, which totally defeated the purpose. She swapped it for a big 150-gallon tank last spring and hasn't had a problem since.

Yeah, that part about refilling with the hose by July... that's exactly the trap. You get the small one thinking you're being smart, but then a dry spell hits and you're basically just using tap water with extra steps. I started with a tiny one too and it was always empty when I actually needed it. Going bigger from the start saves the hassle of upgrading later.

Ugh, that's so true. @val_fox's friend's story proves it. How big did you have to go before it actually lasted through the summer?
