Vent: Our club voted to skip the 'boring' chapters in 'Moby-Dick' and I think it ruined the whole point.

We were six weeks into the book and everyone was groaning about the cetology chapters. The vote was 8 to 3 to just skip from Chapter 32 to the final chase. I argued that those dense, technical chapters ARE the book's atmosphere, that the grind of the details makes Ahab's madness feel real. We read the ending and half the group said it felt 'random and over the top.' Well, yeah, you cut out the 400 pages of buildup that gives it weight. Has anyone else's group tried to cut corners on a classic and totally missed the author's intent?

Showerthought: I tried using a heat gun to soften old putty on a 1920s window and it worked too well

The glass itself got hot enough to crack along a lead line, which I've never seen before. Learned that on really old, thin glass, you gotta keep the heat moving fast and never focus it. Anyone have a better method for removing century-old glazing compound without risking the pane?

Just hit 100 nights in my trusty old tent

I was cleaning it out after a trip to the Red River Gorge and noticed the little tally marks I've been making inside the stuff sack. I bought this tent for a big trip five years ago and it's been through everything from desert heat to mountain rain. It feels like a real win that a piece of gear I use so hard has held up this long without a single major issue. Has anyone else had a tent last this many nights, and what did you do when it finally gave out?

A teller in Boise told me to always check the memo line

I was sending a payment for a car part and wrote 'engine block' in the memo. The teller said she sees that a lot, and it once saved a guy when his payment got lost. The bank used the memo to find his account and fix it. Has anyone else had a memo line actually help sort out a payment mess?

Finally gave those heated dive gloves a shot after my buddy swore by them in Puget Sound last winter.

My hands stayed warm for a full 90-minute inspection job in 45-degree water, which completely changed my mind about cold water gear, so what other game-changing cold water items am I missing?

I was gatekeeping my own collection for years without realizing it

My friend's kid asked to see my old X-Men comics, and I gave him a whole speech about handling them with gloves. He just looked sad and walked away. It hit me that I was more worried about the books than sharing the hobby. Anyone else catch themselves doing this?

Had a crazy week with the new Liebherr LTM 1300 at the Denver site

We were setting 12 massive precast panels for a parking garage, and on Thursday the wind picked up way past the chart. My spotter, Mike, called up and said, 'The flag on the fence is straight out, we gotta stop.' I sat there for two hours waiting for a gust to drop below 15 mph, watching the clock tick. Anyone else ever have a job where the weather just ate a whole day's pay?

My company switched from paper logbooks to a tablet app for crane inspections last month

Before, we'd spend maybe 20 minutes at shift start filling out the same checkboxes and hunting for a pen. Now, the app has photos of each component to tap, and it flags any missed items. The whole thing takes under 10 minutes and the boss gets the report instantly. Has anyone else's yard made this kind of switch, and what app are you using?

Appreciation post: My old logo looked like a blob for years

I made my first logo in 2012 using just the basic shapes tool in an old program. It was a mess of overlapping circles. Last month, I finally sat down and learned to use the pen tool properly over a weekend. The new version is clean, with a single, smooth line forming the icon. Has anyone else had a tool finally click and fix something you'd been stuck on for ages?
