A client told me my lacquer was 'too perfect' and looked plastic, so I switched to a 50/50 mix of satin and gloss for the last three pieces.

I mean, it sounds weird, but that tiny bit of sheen variation makes the wood grain look way more alive, idk, has anyone else tried blending finishes like that?

Totally get that. I see it all the time with new composite shingles versus old cedar shakes. The perfect ones look fake, like a movie set. A little texture and color variation makes a house look real and lived in, not like a plastic model.

Same thing happened with my deck. I re-stained it last summer and at first it looked way too uniform, like plastic. Let it sit through one rainstorm and the sun did its thing, now it looks natural again with all the little uneven spots.

My own face could use some of that variation.
