Wasted $80 on those fancy foam bricks that claim to hold water for days

Bought a case of those Oasis foam alternatives that are supposed to be eco-friendly and they just crumbled into mush after 12 hours in my shop. Lost a whole wedding order of hydrangeas that wilted before the ceremony. Has anyone found a reliable substitute that actually works?

Spent $400 on a fancy dry aging fridge and I regret it

I bought one of those dedicated dry aging fridges for my shop last year. The thing cost me $400 and it breaks down every few months. I had to throw out three whole primal cuts because the temp sensor went haywire. Am I the only one who thinks a normal walk-in does the job just fine?

My aunt told me my pie crust was tough and she was right

She said it after Thanksgiving dinner two years ago. I always used ice water but I was overworking the dough trying to get it perfect. Now I stop mixing as soon as it comes together even if it looks shaggy. The difference was pretty immediate after I changed that. Anyone else get feedback that made them rethink a basic step?

Found my first comic book convention badge from 3 years ago cleaning out my closet last week

It was from a tiny show in a VFW hall outside Portland with maybe 30 tables, and I only bought one beat-up silver age Flash issue for $5, but holding that badge made me realize how far I've come in the hobby since then has anyone else kept their first badge?

Six months of packing lunch instead of buying it, and I finally saw the numbers

I used to drop $12-15 a day on lunch near my office downtown. After I started making sandwiches and leftovers at home, I figured I was saving maybe $50 a month. Then I actually added it up after six months and it came out to $1,860. That's basically a car payment I was throwing away on turkey subs and sad salads. Has anyone else run the numbers and been shocked at what they actually saved?

Hot take: your welding prep is probably overkill

I see guys spending 30 minutes grinding a bevel on every single joint on a boiler tube sheet, but half the time the fit-up is so sloppy it doesn't matter anyway. After 8 years in the trade, I've found that a clean surface and a tight gap matter way more than a perfect 37.5 degree angle. Am I the only one who thinks shops push this prep stuff to sell more grinding wheels?

Watched Twin Peaks for years before I realized Lynch didn't intend it to be funny

I was in my living room about 3 months ago, laughing at how ridiculous Agent Cooper's coffee obsession was. My buddy stopped me mid chuckle and said 'dude, he's not joking, that's the point.' I sat through 2 whole seasons thinking I was in on the joke but really I was just missing the whole damn vibe. Has anyone else had a show completely flip on them like that once you understood the director's real intent?

Changed my mind about bus etiquette after a guy on the 42 told me off

I used to think it was fine to stand in the doorway of the bus while people got off, like a little squeeze wouldn't hurt. Last Tuesday on the 42 through downtown, this older guy with a briefcase stopped right in front of me and said 'You're the reason we're all late, buddy. Let people out first.' He didn't yell, just said it flat and walked off. I stood there for a second and realized he was right. I'd been holding up the whole line for months without thinking about it. Now I step back every time and the flow is way faster. Has anyone else had a random passenger call them out? How'd you take it?

Shoutout to the dive team on that tricky bridge job in Mobile Bay last fall

We were doing a standard inspection on the pilings, and the lead diver insisted on using the old 'touch and feel' method instead of the new sonar mapping gear we had on the boat. I saw him miss a whole section of spalling concrete because the viz was maybe 2 feet, and the client almost failed the whole structure. I've been pushing for the tech on every job since, but some of the old guard still think it's a waste of time. How do you convince a crew that's been doing it one way for 20 years that the new way is better?

Pro tip: don't trust the frozen food box times for your air fryer

I was making frozen mozzarella sticks in my Cosori last night, following the box which said 10 minutes at 400. At 8 minutes, I opened the basket and they were already burnt black. I had to toss the whole batch. I think the air fryer just cooks way faster than a regular oven. Has anyone else found a good rule of thumb for adjusting those times?
