Heads up about the new construction site off Route 9 in Millville
I drove by there yesterday and the ground support for the mobile crane looked like it was sitting on pure, uncompacted fill dirt that had just been dumped, which is a major red flag for anyone setting up.

That site off Route 9 has been using a vibratory plate compactor on that fill for the past week. I saw them working the area where the crane pads are supposed to go just a few days ago. The dirt might look loose on top from recent delivery, but they've been compacting it in layers. It's pretty standard to bring in the final lift right before setting up.

So they're doing the final lift right before the crane shows up? Does that mean they're skipping a proof roll or any kind of density test on that last layer before they put the crane's full weight on it? I've seen guys try to rush that step when the schedule gets tight, and it makes me nervous. What's the usual spec for compaction on a pad like that out there?

Remember that time a crane sank into a pad that looked just like this?

Yeah, that's a scary memory for sure.
